Averill’s life becomes increasingly intolerable as she increasingly feels a menacing presence in her home

The Story

Averill is a woman who leads two lives, as she tries to escape from some perceived threat.

Averill’s life becomes increasingly intolerable as she feels as if her surroundings are closing in on her - but when she tells her husband he does not help her. Eventually she feels she is going mad and cannot endure remaining where she is. After having a sudden complete meltdown, she makes a bid for freedom, but not before having hysterics and wrecking her house. She flees leaving no clue where she is going.

The Story then introduces a new character; She is called Nancy Lee, as the story unfolds, we learn there is a link between the two women.

Nancy Lee is also a woman seeking a new beginning. She wants to leave her life in London where she is working as a call girl. She decides to go up to Scotland to stay with her best friend whom she has known since childhood, intent on making a new life there.

Meanwhile Averill has disappeared and her husband has been accused of her murder. He has no clue where she has gone and cannot explain her disappearance.

While Nancy Lee starts her new life in Scotland, she knows only she can free Averill’s husband of suspicion. But to do so would end all her hopes of beginning a new life.

Averill’s conscience eventually forces her to return to free her husband. However, in the meantime she has a new life for herself including falling in love. She is torn between making a new life with her new love and doing her duty to the husband she has wronged.
